Art in the square
The creative trademark of the Tollwood Festival
Sparkling mirror sculptures, word artworks, and colorful planets
In addition to theater, concerts, and performances, Tollwood presents a wide variety of art installations and sculptures at each festival. Works of art transform the Theresienwiese into a sparkling sea of lights. Everything glitters and shines – a tour of the festival grounds reveals the diversity on offer.
Torsten Mühlbach: Dove of Peace
Passing by the dancing Bacchus, the dove of peace welcomes the audience to the festival. Torsten Mühlbach collaborated with Gregor Passens to stage the motto for the Tollwood Winter Festival. As a central symbol of peace, the sculpture, composed of countless small mirror fragments, inspires hope. The enchanted forest, Pegasus, and a new, imposing, friendly snowman also shine with hope. As different as they may be, they also have many things in common—just like all of us.
Veronika Angloher: Peace Sign
Artist Veronika Angloher has created a large symbol of peace for Tollwood: a giant peace sign on which visitors can attach colorful stickers bearing their hopes and messages of peace. A diverse symbol for the world!
Creative works of art
Torsten Mühlbach: Bacchus is Dancing
In the entrance area, visitors are greeted by Torsten Mühlbach’s popular sculpture “Bacchus is dancing,” better known as the glowing grapevine. Like his Greek brother Dionysus, the Roman god was fond of intoxication, and Torsten Mühlbach dedicates his sculpture to this god.
Andrey von Schlippe: Planets
When you look up at the Munich sky, you see not only shining stars, but also Andrey von Schlippe’s planets floating above the Market of Ideas. The universe is just as diverse as our Earth. A symbol of diversity and openness to the unknown.
Torsten Mühlbach: Enchanted forest & Pegasus
It glitters and sparkles when Tollwood displays Torsten Mühlbach’s works of art at the winter festival. In the enchanted forest at the main entrance, a three-meter-high mirror snowman welcomes visitors. At the entrance to Bavaria, an enchanted forest is home to the glowing Pegasus, and a twelve-meter-high Christmas tree made of disco balls shines across the grounds.
Adam Stubley: Word sculptures
Adam Stubley focuses on the power of words with his word sculptures MUT (courage) and WIR ALLE (all of us). And WERTE MENSCHEN (values people) welcomes visitors at the main entrance – fitting for this year’s festival motto “Now more than ever! – For peace, democracy, and the environment.”
Veronika Angloher: Fence design
“Now more than ever! – For peace, democracy, and the environment” – the motto of the Winter Festival is also reflected in the fence design by freelance artist Veronika Angloher. The dove of peace is not alone: a flock on the fence accompanies visitors to the Winter Festival. A single symbol becomes a community. Because we must stick together – now more than ever.
